After five decades of dedicated service, Mike Cox is retiring from his position as a lead fleet technician at Pepco. Reflecting on what initially drew him to Pepco, Mike recalls, “While working for a small company, I met a Pepco driver and asked him about potential job openings. His response prompted me to visit the Pepco employment office, where I completed an application, attended an interview, and then received a job offer.” Over the years, Pepco has undergone significant transformations, evolving in areas of technology and green energy as well as operationally. Mike noted, “The technological advancements and the company’s growth have been amazing. It’s been a privilege to be part of this journey.”
Throughout his 50-year tenure, Mike has experienced numerous memorable moments and challenges. “One of the most unforgettable experiences was when we put chains on the tires during heavy snow periods for the entire fleet, that was hard work,” he shared. “It was a huge project, but we needed to be ready to assist the customers regardless of the weather.”
Despite facing several challenges, such as adapting to new technologies and managing complex repairs, Mike’s determination and expertise always saw him through. “The key to overcoming challenges is to stay adaptable and never stop learning,” he advised. His role at Pepco evolved over the years, from handling basic maintenance tasks to being the leading voice for new mechanics. “It’s been rewarding to mentor younger mechanics and see them grow,” he added.
Mike’s tenure as the lead technician at the Benning location was marked by his exceptional leadership and technical prowess. Kevin Wright, Supervisor of Fleet Maintenance at Benning, highlighted his significant contributions. “Mike demonstrated exceptional leadership as the lead technician at the Benning location, expertly managing the maintenance of a 580-piece equipment fleet for the service center. His hands-on approach and dedication resulted in a consistently high fleet availability rating of 98%. Mike’s contributions were invaluable, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
When asked what he would miss most about working at Pepco, Mike didn’t hesitate. “The people, without a doubt. The friendships and bonds I’ve formed here are matchless,” he said. Offering advice to newcomers, Mike emphasized the importance of passion and perseverance. “Be passionate about what you do and stay committed. This is a great company and incredibly rewarding,” he encouraged. As he looks forward to retirement, Mike is excited about spending more time with his wife Greta and sons Michael and Justin. He also wants to spend some time traveling.
Mike’s departure marks the end of an era at Pepco. His unparalleled dedication and expertise have left an indelible mark on the company and its employees. As Pepco moves forward, Mike’s legacy of hard work, passion, and perseverance will continue to inspire future generations of fleet mechanics. “I’ve had a fulfilling career, and I’m grateful for every moment,” Mike concluded.
