Celebrating Pepco’s Harvard Substation Grand Reopening

Our Pepco teams, local partners, and community members came together to celebrate the ribbon-cutting for the newly upgraded Harvard Substation. This major milestone – a part of our Capital Grid Project – marks a crucial step in powering a brighter, more resilient future for DC.

Following the ceremony, community members gathered at the Carlos Rosario International School to celebrate the achievement, as we expressed our gratitude to the neighbors who supported the project every step of the way.

Originally constructed in the 1900s, the Harvard Substation has long served the Columbia Heights and Pleasant Plains neighborhoods. As these areas expanded with new homes, businesses, and mixed-use developments, so did the demand for reliable energy.

Working closely with our partners at the District Department of Transportation, ANC 1A Commissioners, DC Water, Verizon, and the Harvard Substation Advisory Group, we installed new technology and expanded its capacity all while preserving the historic building’s character. In doing so, this site can now provide stronger, more reliable energy to support continued growth and economic development in our region.

The Capital Grid Project is an investment in a stronger, more connected energy grid for our community. Through system upgrades and the addition of a new substation in the Mount Vernon area, we’re creating a modernized grid that can meet the energy demands of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
