We want to keep our customers informed about an ongoing issue affecting the 22nd Street substation in Washington, D.C., and what it may mean for your service in the coming days.
What Happened?
On July 15, Pepco experienced multiple equipment failures that placed significant strain on our electric system in the Dupont Circle and West End areas. Since then, our crews have been working around the clock to make critical repairs. While we’ve made progress, the complexity of the damage means that work will continue through the end of the month.
Why Are There Outages?
To prevent larger, more widespread outages, we’ve had to proactively disconnect service to some customers during periods of high demand. These controlled outages are necessary to protect the system while repairs are underway.
We understand how disruptive this can be, especially when outages happen more than once, and we sincerely thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
What You Can Expect
- Ongoing risk of outages until permanent repairs are completed.
- Restoration times when outages occur may be suspended due to the complexity of the system and work required.
- Crews will continue working safely and as quickly as possible to restore all equipment back to its normal configuration.
How You Can Help
Reducing energy use can help ease the strain on the system and minimize the risk of further outages. Here are a few simple ways to help:
- Turn off unnecessary lights and devices.
- Adjust your thermostat to a comfortable but efficient setting.
- Use heat-producing appliances like ovens and dryers during cooler hours.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed to reduce indoor heat.
