Annual STEM Academy Expands, Empowering Future Innovators

Pepco and our parent company, Exelon, are bringing young women and men together to encourage the next generation’s interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.

The annual STEM Academy, now in its seventh year, empowers young women from the District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey to pursue careers in STEM. This week-long initiative aims to close the gap that exists for young women and people of color in STEM.

This year also marks a significant milestone as the academy expanded to include a Boys to STEM program, further our dedication to STEM education and engagement.

This year’s academies featured a unique opportunity to learn about and experience critical energy equipment and the many roles needed to maintain the power grid. At Pepco’s Benning Service Center in the District, students saw live line demonstrations, explored mobile substations, discussed the importance of safety, and more. Specialized Pepco employees from engineering, underground construction, and other areas showcased the variety of skills, innovation and adaptability it takes to keep power flowing and the lights on.

Beyond demonstrations, the academies are filled with hands-on activities and challenges designed to foster problem-solving skills and teamwork. These activities encourage students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, promoting critical thinking and creativity. By the end of the program, teams presented their own research and design solutions for real-world problems directly affecting our communities as a result of the climate crisis.

“The Exelon Foundation STEM Academy introduced me to new STEM careers and reaffirmed my passion for the field,” said Marilyn Guzman, a rising senior at Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland. “I was able to meet other girls my age who shared that same enthusiasm. I am beyond grateful to have been a participant of the academy and for the opportunities it has given me. And, I’m proud to say that my team, Sunshower Collective, won Judges Choice for Most Creative Model and the “Moving On Up” award for runner-up of the overall challenge!”

In addition to the summer program, students can get involved year-round with the Exelon Foundation Mentorship Program, career chat webinars, STEM days with hands-on activities, professional development workshops, and more.
