Autumn Acts of Kindness

Giving back to the community is a year-round commitment for our employees. During the holiday season, we know the need for assistance can be even greater and the Autumn Acts of Kindness initiative helps make sure we are giving back when our communities need it most. This month-long focus on being thankful and helping others resulted in several volunteer events throughout November. Here are a few highlights:

Thanksgiving Dinner – We partnered with Catholic Charities DC on Nov. 26 to provide an elegant Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless and less fortunate in the area. Employee volunteers served nearly 420 dinners and handed out hundreds of winter coats and toiletry kits. The volunteers also engaged in lively conversations with attendees and made sure everyone left with warm clothing and full stomachs. This is the seventh year we have partnered with Catholic Charities DC in hosting this event at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery.

Flip-the-Switch Zoolights Event – We joined representatives from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the inaugural Flip-the-Switch event on Nov. 29 to officially open ZooLights, a free event at the National Zoo featuring 500,000 environmentally friendly LED lights, a laser light show, live music performances, tasty winter treats and opportunities for holiday shopping. New this year, we are sponsoring Pepco Pop-Up Fridays each week at the zoo’s Conservation Pavilion, where guests can interact with exciting displays and learn more about innovative technologies, energy efficiency programs, or take a commemorative photo at our photo booth. In addition, we will be hosting three local chapters of the Boys and Girls Club and local students who participated in this summer’s Exelon STEM Academy.

As we move into December, Pepco employees are continuing with the holiday spirit of giving.  To learn more about our ongoing community initiatives, visit our Powering Communities webpage.
