Community Center Gets Funding Boost to Save Energy and Money

Our commitment to powering communities goes far beyond delivering safe and reliable service. We recently presented, through our Energy Savings for Business program, a ceremonial check for $11,750 to Rainbow Community Development Center (RCDC). This money will go towards replacing aging, inefficient refrigeration and freezer units with new, high-capacity energy-efficient models. Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) contributed an additional $31,530 in grant funding to cover the remainder of the project’s cost—part of its broader efforts to reduce energy use, support climate action, and positively impact local communities.

Founded in 2003, RCDC provides various services including a food pantry, emergency shelter, eviction prevention, and more. The Center’s food pantry serves over 113,000 people each year from its 3,600 square-foot facility. Recent equipment upgrades, which are energy-efficient, will reduce RCDC’s operating costs and expand its food storage capacity. These improvements ensure more reliable refrigeration, lower energy bills, and allow the savings to be reinvested into community support.

“The new equipment is a game changer for our center,” said Patricia Drumming, executive director, RCDC. “With expanded refrigeration and lower energy costs, we’re now able to serve more people and provide food assistance more efficiently. This helps us make a greater impact in the community.”

Our Energy Savings for Business program helps local businesses and nonprofits reduce energy usage by covering up to 80 percent of the total project cost for qualifying energy-efficient equipment. For organizations like RCDC, that means big impact with minimal out-of-pocket expense.

Thanks to the shared commitment of Pepco and MEA, this project is about more than just saving energy—it’s about supporting climate action; promoting clean, reliable energy; reducing energy-related greenhouse gas emissions; and empowering community-based organizations to do even more for the people who rely on them.
