The D.C. Powerline Undergrounding Project (DC PLUG), a long-term infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen the District’s electric grid, is fully underway. The initiative launched in 2019, as a partnership between Pepco and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and is focused on improving grid resiliency by placing 20 of the District’s most vulnerable power lines underground.
By moving power lines underground across Wards 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8, the project is actively enhancing grid reliability, reducing the risk of outages, and helping lower long-term maintenance and storm recovery costs. Since inception, 5 feeders have been completed, with ongoing infrastructure investments resulting in a 51% decrease in outages for DC and Maryland customers over the past decade. These improvements help ensure that our customers continue having access to safe, reliable power, supporting the people and services that keep our communities thriving.
