Reliability Project Improves Service Reliability for Sussex County Customers

As many people continue spending more time at home, essential work from our field crews and engineers continues, ensuring we meet the summer energy needs of customers. Recently, a number of dedicated employees completed a major transmission line upgrade to enhance system resiliency and improve reliability for more than 75,000 customers in Sussex County, Del., five months ahead of schedule.


The project included upgrading 11 miles of transmission line—between the Cool Spring substation and the Indian River substation—to support the growing energy needs of customers across the service area. The project provides a timely upgrade to the local energy grid, fortifying the system for the many local residents.

As part of the project, crews installed stronger, state-of-the-art steel utility poles, capable of withstanding winds up to 120 mph, to reduce the impacts of more powerful storms. This team of essential employees also installed innovative technologies to improve system reliability, such as specialized equipment that can automatically restore service more quickly or isolate damage—allowing for the quicker restoration of service if outages occur.


The transmission line upgrade is part of a broader reliability improvement effort  implemented across our service area to help reduce outages and enhance the resiliency of the local energy grid. This effort includes modernizing infrastructure, such as transmission and distribution lines, and adding greater automation on the local energy grid with new substations and equipment.
