Installing Energy Efficient Technology Across Atlantic City

Atlantic City Electric is embarking on an important initiative to provide Atlantic City with a more energy efficient lighting option that will enhance public safety and significantly reduce energy costs. It’s estimated that the city will save about $200,000 each year.

We will upgrade nearly 5,700 company-owned streetlights with high energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) technology throughout Atlantic City, one of the first cities in the state to fully convert to LED lights. Atlantic City Electric was the first utility in the state to establish an LED streetlighting tariff in 2012, which helps advance this technology across South Jersey.

“This important partnership with the City of Atlantic City and the Board of Public Utilities will greatly improve lighting, make the community safer and reduce the city’s street lighting energy usage,” said Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric region president. “LED streetlight technology is one example of how we are advancing innovative technologies that are transforming the future energy experience for our customers.”

The project is expected to reduce energy consumption by approximately 4.6 million kilowatt hours, resulting in the reduction of approximately 7.2 million pounds of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing 625 cars from the road.

On average, LED streetlight bulbs can reduce energy use by up to 75 percent. LED technology requires less maintenance and has a lifespan of approximately 20 years – that’s four times longer than the bulbs found in traditional streetlights.
