Women’s Equality Day serves as a moment to reflect on our values, celebrate the contributions of women across our organization, and reaffirm our commitment to advancing diversity and equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and operational fields.
As part of our ongoing support for gender equity and inclusion in our industry we’re proud to spotlight the PHI Women in Operations initiative—a newly formed group dedicated to empowering, connecting, and advancing women across gas and electric operations at Pepco Holdings.

Shannon McKeehan
Manager of Regional Electric Operations, Delmarva Power
Time with company: 16 years
What does your role entail?
I lead a dedicated team of frontline supervisors, line crews, and trouble and service first responders who are essential to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of Delmarva Power’s electric distribution system across Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
We operate 24/7, handling both scheduled work and emergent issues within our service territory. Our team also provides mutual assistance to other districts and companies when needed, reinforcing our commitment to operational excellence and community support.
What does Women’s Equality Day mean to you personally and professionally?
To me, it’s a powerful reminder of the incredible contributions women have made across the world. It fills me with pride to reflect on how far we’ve come and how meaningful our impact has been.
In the utility industry, which has traditionally been male-dominated, I’ve witnessed firsthand how women have stepped up, driven change, and made a lasting difference. Over my time with the company, it’s been inspiring to see that progress, and even more rewarding to be part of it.
What inspired you to pursue a career in operations, and how has your journey evolved at Delmarva Power?
My Dad worked in Operations at Delmarva Power for 37 years before recently retiring. Growing up, the poles, wires, and transformers that surrounded us weren’t just background noise—they were part of everyday conversations between me and my dad. I learned early on just how much effort goes into delivering electricity to our customers, and that understanding gave me deep respect and appreciation for the people who work hard to keep the lights on.
I didn’t so much choose a career in operations, I followed a path that felt natural. I began as an intern in Pepco Holdings’ IT department, and my interest grew as I spent time supporting operations and seeing what happens behind the scenes. Eventually, I shifted my focus and set my sights on becoming part of the Operations team.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in operations or energy?
If you have any interest in operations or the energy sector, my advice is simple: don’t hesitate, go for it. It’s an incredibly rewarding career, and the impact you make has a lasting effect on the communities we serve.
That’s why I believe this is such an important group. It gives us a platform to share the experiences of women already working in operations. Whether that’s in the field, in the control center, or in leadership, it can help spark interest in others who may be curious but unsure where to start. Our goal is to show that women are thriving in operations, working side by side with our outstanding male colleagues, and that it takes all of us, together, to build a successful team.
