It’s easy to overlook what’s underground when you’re focused on what’s above it — a new mailbox, a backyard firepit or that perfect row of fall mums. But before you grab a shovel, we have one simple reminder: Call 811 first.
August 11, or 8/11 Day, is National Call Before You Dig Day, and it’s the perfect time to pause and think about what’s below the surface. Every year, underground utility lines are damaged by people digging without checking first. In 2024, Pepco responded to more than 100 incidents due to unsafe digging practices.
Why It Matters
Beneath your feet are thousands of miles of electric lines, gas pipelines, water mains and communication cables. Accidentally striking one of these lines can lead to serious injury, costly repairs and outages that affect entire neighborhoods.
The Good News? It’s Easy to Avoid.
Calling 811 connects you to Miss Utility, the one-call notification center for the District and Maryland. Within a few days, professional locators will mark the approximate location of underground lines, so you know where it’s safe to dig.
Safe Digging Starts with These Simple Steps:
- Call 811 at least three business days before you dig.
- Wait for the marks — don’t start until all utilities have responded.
- Respect the markings and dig with care.
- Rethink your project if it’s too close to marked lines.
- Double-check your contractor has made the call if you’ve hired help.
A Shared Responsibility
Whether you’re a homeowner, renter or contractor, safe digging is everyone’s responsibility – and it starts with one free, easy call.
Let’s keep our communities safe and connected, one project at a time.
