We want to keep our customers informed about an ongoing issue affecting the 22nd Street substation in Washington, D.C., and what it may mean for your service in the coming days.
What Happened?
On July 15, Pepco experienced multiple equipment failures that damaged two underground powerlines, also known as feeders, that supports our 22nd Street substation. Those failures caused an increased load and stress on the system that led to a series of outages in the Dupont Circle and West End neighborhoods in DC. Since the initial outage, our crews have been working around the clock to make permanent repairs to the impacted feeders.
August 5 update: Pepco crews continue to make strong progress on repairs. Over the weekend, crews completed permanent repairs to one of the two damaged underground power lines that support the substation (also known as feeders). With this work done, three of the four main lines serving the substation are now back in service. This is a major step forward as it helps ease the load on the system and lowers the chance of further emergent outages in the area.
Work is continuing on the final line, which runs along 11th Street NW between Monroe Street and V Street. You may continue to see Pepco crews and contractors in this area over the coming days as they complete the final steps, which involve carefully joining sections of cable together—a process known as splicing.
All work is expected to be completed within the coming days.
