Delmarva Power recently teamed up with the American Heart Association for their 2025 STEM Goes Red event, dedicated to building confidence, mentorship, and hands-on STEM education for more than 200 middle and high school girls from 11 schools across Delaware. This event truly speaks to our commitment to workforce development, primarily in STEM education, to help build a next-generation workforce that is diverse and reflective of our community.
Later in the day, students participated in hands-on workshops led by local businesses in the health, energy, finance, banking, and technology industries. Delmarva Power hosted two interactive workshops during the breakout sessions, where our engineers discussed grid modernization and environmental topics, such as soil testing. The students were very engaged and asked the engineers questions about how they got their start in the energy industry, what their day-to-day work entailed and got their hands dirty in an oil simulation. In this activity, students attempted to clean up an oil spill in water using various materials such as cotton balls, paper towels, and sponge pads. This exercise demonstrated the methods our environmental team employs to manage oil spills in the field, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Confidence building was a significant aspect of this event. The girls participated in various activities, such as a fashion show where they called out the STEM career path they were interested in pursuing at the end of the runway and used the letters of their name to highlight positive qualities about themselves. They were gifted pocket mirrors and reminded to affirm themselves each time they see their reflection. The event concluded with a confidence panel featuring women STEM industry leaders from various corporations and organizations, including our very own Amber Perry, vice president, Regulatory Strategy and Policy, who shared her personal journey and how working on confidence positively impacted her career. Watch the video below to hear Amber’s insightful advice for students considering a career in the STEM field.
