Celebrating Two Decades of Safety Through Smoke Alarm Donations

We are proud to celebrate a twenty-year partnership with DC Fire and EMS, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and Prince George’s County Fire and EMS by donating life saving smoke alarms to each jurisdiction. Each emergency agency received 1,000 alarms to provide to communities and residents who need the life saving devices.

Donations began in 2004 as part of our Emergency Services Partnership Program (ESSP). Since the first donation twenty years ago, 65,000 alarms have been donated. The ESSP also helps fund and provide electrical safety training, emergency management conferences and educational programs that benefit first responders and the public across our service area. Lowe’s Home Improvement has been a valuable partner with ESSP since 2004. Their partnership has allowed the program to succeed by providing the alarms to Pepco consistently for twenty years.

“Our longstanding partnership, which spans over 20 years, has been a cornerstone in our community”, said Washington, D.C. Deputy Fire Chief Mitchell Kannry. ”Pepco’s annual donation has been instrumental in the success of our All Hands On Prevention Program, providing 20,000 smoke alarms to the residents of the District of Columbia. These alarms have been the gateway to educate residents in their homes, leading to a significant reduction in loss of life and injury.

Customers in need of smoke alarm can reach out each emergency organization:

  • DC residents can go to fems.fireprevention@dc.gov or at 202-727-1614
  • Montgomery County residents can contact “311” for more information
  • Prince George’s County residents can contact Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department Watch Office at 301-583-2200 or send an e-mail to PGFD_Communityrelations@co.pg.md.us

The ESSP and alarm donations demonstrated the positive value of public and private partnerships that enable us to provide more resources to the communities and residents who them most.
