Powering Through Summer: How Atlantic City Electric Prepares for Heat, Storms, and More

As temperatures rise and summer storms loom, Atlantic City Electric is stepping up to ensure South Jersey stays powered, safe, and informed. During a recent summer readiness demonstration in Williamstown, the company showcased a transmission line what was recently rebuilt with wind-resistant metal poles as part of the Greater Gloucester and Camden Counties Reliability Project—just one example of the infrastructure upgrades that have helped reduce the frequency of electric outages by 41 percent over the past decade. But the work doesn’t stop there.

Crews are actively inspecting and upgrading equipment, trimming trees near power lines, installing underground systems, and reinforcing aerial cables. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the grid and improve response times when outages do occur. Teams across the company are also sharpening their storm response skills through drills and planning exercises.

“As we head into summer, I’m proud of our team’s year-round commitment to delivering safe and reliable service across South Jersey,” said Kristin McEvoy, Director of External Affairs. “We’re not just focused on keeping the lights on—we’re also helping customers stay cool and manage their energy bills.”

In addition to storm prep, Atlantic City Electric works closely with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to respond to wildfires during the summer months and year-round. If necessary, the company may proactively de-energize parts of the grid to protect infrastructure and coordinate with natural gas suppliers to ensure safety.

Customers are encouraged to take steps to reduce energy use and save money this summer:

  •  Enroll in Budget Billing. This program offers predictable monthly payments based on a customer’s electricity usage over the past 12 months, helping avoid seasonal spikes in bills.
  • Check the thermostat. If health permits, keep the thermostat temperature higher during the summertime. This can save as much as 10 percent a year on cooling costs by turning a thermostat up 7° to10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting.
  • Request a Whole Home Energy Assessment. For custom recommendations for a home, customers can request a no-cost Whole Home Energy Assessment. An Energy Analyst will help customers understand how the home uses energy, and the customer may receive energy-efficient products installed at no cost. Customers can visit atlanticcityelectric.com/WaysToSave to learn more.
  • Save energy and money through ‘My Account’. A customer’s Atlantic City Electric online account contains tools and information that allow them to track and manage their energy use. They can also sign up to receive notifications if their energy usage is trending higher than usual.
